The Julie Mittens are a Dutch free rock trio that specializes in live
improvisations, consisting of guitarist Martin Luiten (who replaced
Aart-Jan Schakenbos in 2012), bassist Michel van Dam and drummer Leo
Fabriek. Taking cues from free jazz and Japanese noise rock as a starting
point, the group plays improvisations that are wild and unstructured, but
display highly advanced communication and speed of thought in terms of interplay.
Together with bass clarinet player Gareth Davis the Julie Mittens have recorded two albums with compositions of the Austrian composer Peter Ablinger, who both will be released in 2014.
